His body was discovered near Concord Road outside the E & L Lounge around 2 a.m. He had been shot in the abdomen and later succumbed to his injuries at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. Darrell Howard was African American.

Jackson turned himself into the police and confessed to shooting Howard. He was charged with murder and later indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury. Despite this, Jackson was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
