On the night of May 12, 2023, 24-year-old Atrail Blaine Keith Vallian was fatally shot at Babe Zaharias Park in Beaumont, Texas. The incident occurred around 10:25 p.m. in the pavilion area of the park, located off Interstate 10. Emergency responders transported Vallian to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath, Beaumont Police Department's Criminal Investigations Unit launched a comprehensive investigation.
Through witness interviews and community tips, they identified 27-year-old Beaumont resident, Taji Malik Myers, as the primary suspect. Eyewitnesses positively identified Myers as the shooter, and it was reported that he fled the scene with a woman in a late 1990s model baby blue Buick LeSabre. The vehicle was located and seized shortly after the homicide. A search warrant was executed at Myers' residence on the morning of May 13, but he was not found at that time.
On May 17, 2023, acting on further information, police apprehended Myers near the intersection of Crockett and Sixth streets in Beaumont. He attempted to flee but was quickly taken into custody without incident. Myers was transported to the Beaumont Police Department for questioning before being booked into the Jefferson County Jail. Justice of the Peace Ben Collins Sr. set Myers' bond at $1 million.
Subsequently, the Jefferson County grand jury indicted Myers for murder in connection with Vallian's death. If convicted, he faces a potential life sentence. The investigation was notably aided by numerous Crime Stoppers tips and the vigilance of community members, underscoring the collaborative effort between law enforcement and the public in addressing violent crime.
A memorial service for Atrail Vallian was held on May 27, 2023, at Mercy Funeral Home Chapel in Beaumont, Texas, with burial following at Anthony Cemetery. The community mourned the loss of a young life, as the legal process against the accused proceeded.
