Richard Shillow, a 31-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on March 27, 2022, in Beaumont, Texas. Richard was found with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso next to a red Cadillac. He was immediately taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The incident occurred at the Virginia Estate Apartments, a location that has since become a somber reminder of the violence that claimed his life.
The investigation into Richard Shillow's death revealed
that he was approached by two men, one of whom was armed, who began shooting at him. Surveillance footage captured the suspects' vehicle, a stolen GMC, which was later tracked down using a cell phone left in the car at the time of the theft. The police arrested five individuals in connection with the murder, including Kaylon Johnson, who was 16 years old at the time of the crime. Johnson pled guilty to the murder charge and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He waived his right to appeal and will not be allowed to own a firearm following his release.
In addition to Johnson, two other suspects, Charles Verdine Jr., 19, and Ronald Babino Jr., 23, were also arrested and charged with murder. Verdine pled guilty and received a 35-year prison sentence, while Babino was sentenced to 22 years in prison. The other three suspects involved in the crime were juveniles, who have not been cooperating with law enforcement. The police chief expressed concern over the growing trend of juveniles committing violent crimes, noting that they often show no remorse and act like hardened criminals.
Richard Shillow's family has been left devastated by his untimely death. He was a loving father to two young children, a 2-year-old and a newborn, and his family described him as a kind and generous person who would give the shirt off his back to help others. In the wake of his death, his family has called for change and urged parents to take responsibility for their children's actions to prevent further tragedies like this one. The community has rallied around the Shillow family, holding a balloon release in his memory and hoping that their loss can serve as a catalyst for positive change.
