Brandon Johnson, a 33-year-old male from Austin, Texas, tragically died on June 23, 2021, from gunshot wounds sustained near Givens Park in East Austin. Johnson was found unresponsive in a parked car near the park's tennis courts and was later pronounced dead at Dell Seton Medical Center. The Austin Police Department responded to the scene and began life-saving measures, but unfortunately, Johnson succumbed to his injuries.
Following Johnson's death, the APD launched an investigation
and arrested two suspects, Laderious Nicholson and Sheawna Caldwell. Nicholson was charged with first-degree murder and held on a $500,000 bond, while Caldwell faced charges of aggravated robbery with a $100,000 bond. Both suspects were taken into custody by the Lonestar Fugitive Task Force.
The investigation revealed that Johnson was shot around 8:25 p.m. on June 23, 2021, and the incident was believed to be the result of a confrontation that escalated into gunfire. The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death.
In addition to the arrests, the case saw further legal developments, including an appeal by the State of Texas against a trial court's decision to dismiss the murder indictment against Brandon Johnson due to alleged discovery violations by the prosecution. The appellate court ultimately reversed the dismissal and remanded the case for further proceedings.
