On the evening of September 30, 2024, at approximately 8:20 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to reports of a shooting at the Pathways at Northgate Apartments, located at 9120 Northgate Boulevard in North Austin. Upon arrival, they discovered 16-year-old Ahsun Madison lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by emergency personnel, Madison was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:01 p.m.
Investigators quickly identified the suspect as another 16-year-old male, whose identity has not been disclosed due to his juvenile status. This individual had a history of involvement in multiple shootings in the area earlier in the year and was out on bond for prior offenses at the time of Madison's death. Notably, he was present during a previous homicide in January 2024, though he was not the shooter in that incident.
The investigation revealed that Madison had gone to the apartment complex to confront someone who had been bullying him for years, possibly due to his sexuality. According to his parents, Madison was a free-spirited individual who enjoyed the arts and was in the process of self-discovery. Tragically, during this confrontation, he was fatally shot.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene but was subsequently located and apprehended by APD's Gang Suppression Unit. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and booked into the Gardner-Betts Juvenile Justice Center. The case is being investigated as Austin's 48th homicide of 2024.
The incident has raised concerns about the rise in violent crimes committed by juveniles in the North Austin area. Detective Nicholas Gebhart of the Austin Police Department noted an unusually high amount of violent crime involving juveniles in that region. The community and Madison's family are calling for justice and a reevaluation of how such cases are handled, especially considering the suspect's prior criminal history and the fact that he was out on bond at the time of the shooting.
