David Bryan Herrera, a 22-year-old male, tragically lost his life on September 9, 2021, in Austin, Texas. Herrera was fatally shot in the parking lot of a gas station located at 183 and Cameron Road in Northeast Austin. According to police reports, Herrera made a comment to the Black female driver of a Silver Acura SUV as she was leaving the store. A Black male, later identified as Charles Michael Deshawn Walker, 17, was sitting in the front passenger seat of the Acura.
Walker exited the vehicle with a gun and shot Herrera multiple times before both Walker and the female driver fled the scene in the SUV.
The Austin Police Department responded to the scene and found Herrera with gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving measures, Herrera succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses and surveillance video helped detectives identify Walker as the suspect. Walker was arrested on October 4, 2021, at a motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, on a first-degree murder warrant issued by homicide detectives in Austin. He was taken into custody and held in the Nueces County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
The investigation revealed that Walker and the female driver were from the San Antonio area. Detectives continued to ask for any additional information or video footage of the incident to aid in their investigation. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in Austin, as the city reached a record number of homicides in 2021.
