On November 24, 2021, 28-year-old Jose Juan Vasquez, a Hispanic male, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Walmart in Northeast Austin, Texas. The incident occurred around 10:39 p.m., when Vasquez was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at 11:20 p.m.
The Austin Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide and released photos of two
suspects believed to be involved. The first suspect was described as a 34-year-old Black male, approximately 6'1" tall with a large build, last seen wearing a white t-shirt and white shorts with "Metal Night" print and white Jordans shoes. The second suspect was identified as a heavy-set 40-year-old Black male, around 5'10" tall, wearing a black t-shirt, torn blue jean shorts, red/orange running shoes, and a black mask with white lettering. The suspects were believed to have fled the scene in a black sedan, possibly a Ford.
Following the investigation, APD detectives issued an arrest warrant for Ronald Leon Bryant, a 42-year-old Black male, on December 23, 2021. Bryant was arrested on December 28, 2021, by the Lonestar Fugitive Task Force and has been held on a $500,000 bond. Bryant was charged with the murder of Jose Juan Vasquez.
The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and officially ruled Vasquez's death as a homicide due to gunshot wounds. This tragic incident marked Austin's 84th homicide of 2021, highlighting a concerning rise in violent crime in the city.
The community and law enforcement continue to seek justice for Jose Juan Vasquez, urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
