Marcus Allen Freeman, a 34-year-old African American man from Port Arthur, Texas, was tragically found dead on January 21, 2022. He was discovered unresponsive in his vehicle at the Normandy Apartments, suffering from a gunshot wound. Freeman was the brother of former Port Arthur Mayor Derrick Freeman. The circumstances surrounding his death suggested that he was shot the previous day, on his 34th birthday.
The investigation into Freeman's death revealed that he had been involved in a
violent encounter related to a marijuana sale. Text messages and surveillance footage indicated that Freeman was supposed to meet an individual to complete the transaction. The footage captured the sound of gunshots fired from two different guns, and thirteen 9mm shell casings were found at the scene.
An 18-year-old named Dastacy Lawrence was identified as a suspect in the case. Lawrence was accused of sending the text messages to Freeman and was seen on surveillance footage near the scene of the shooting. Despite initially evading arrest, Lawrence eventually turned himself into the Jefferson County Correctional Facility on April 25, 2022, and was held on a $950,000 bond.
The case has drawn significant attention, with Freeman's mother urging the city to take preventive action at apartment complexes to avoid similar tragedies. The investigation remains ongoing, and Lawrence continues to face charges related to Freeman's murder.
