Adel Elhindawi, a 52-year-old man of Middle Eastern descent, was the owner of Salem Autos, a used car dealership in Arlington, Texas. On May 16, 2022, Elhindawi was fatally shot while attempting to retrieve a loaner car that had not been returned by a customer. He succumbed to his injuries three days later.
The incident occurred when Elhindawi and an employee went to the customer's location to reclaim the loaner vehicle.
During the encounter, the customer, identified as Brian Espy, opened fire on Elhindawi, striking him in the head. Elhindawi crashed into a parked car and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Brian Espy, a 31-year-old man, was arrested two days after the shooting and initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated robbery. However, the charges were later upgraded to capital murder when Elhindawi passed away. Espy was found guilty of the murder and sentenced to 55 years in prison. Another individual, Quyanna Massie, who was driving the loaner car at the time of the shooting, was also arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
