Constable Alonzo "Lon" Rains, a male U.S. Army veteran of the Spanish-American War, was shot and killed on December 23, 1905, while investigating a disturbance in Chickamauga, Tennessee. Citizens had requested his presence to keep the peace during a Christmas celebration. As he approached a house where a group of men were causing a disturbance, one of the men shot him in the chest with a shotgun, killing him instantly.
