William Obediah 'Obe' Spencer, a 27-year-old grocery store executive from Memphis, Tennessee, was tragically murdered on May 29, 1923. His death was the result of a violent attack by an assailant who shot him with a pistol while he was with his date, schoolteacher Laura Wheaton Johnson, in their car.
