Murel Mitchell Marie, a 61-year-old African American man, died on September 14, 1969, in Knoxville, Tennessee. His death was part of a cold case that remains unsolved to this day. On September 13, 1969, Knoxville Police were called to investigate a burned car at Mead's Quarry, where they discovered the bodies of Murel Marie and Hubert Johnson, 45, of Straw Plains. Both men were last seen together at Buch's Tavern on Gay Street around 11:30 p.m., before heading to North Gay Cafe.
