Lieutenant Clarence P. Cox Jr., aged 53, was a dedicated officer with the Memphis Police Department. He tragically lost his life on May 12, 1981, while attempting to arrest a suspect who was wanted for escape and the murder of a priest. The suspect managed to gain control of Lieutenant Cox's service weapon and shot him with it. This suspect was later arrested in Jackson, Tennessee, and was sentenced to death. However, he was subsequently murdered in prison by other death row inmates.
