On the evening of April 18, 2026, Derrick Hubbard, a 31-year-old man, was fatally shot in East Oakland. The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. in the 6400 block of Foothill Boulevard, where Hubbard was standing with friends. Two individuals, later identified as 19-year-old Davione Sharp and 24-year-old Isaanae Morton, approached the group. Sharp allegedly opened fire, shooting Hubbard multiple times before fleeing with Morton. Hubbard succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
He was a father of two daughters and was involved in a re-entry program.
The initial shooting set off a tragic chain of events that resulted in a second death that same night. In what authorities believe to be a retaliatory act, associates of Hubbard pursued Sharp and Morton. In the ensuing confrontation, Morton was shot and killed, while Sharp managed to escape. A third person was also wounded in the series of events but survived.
Investigators later determined that the motive for Hubbard's murder stemmed from a dispute that had occurred earlier at an Oakland First Fridays event. While the specifics of the disagreement have not been publicly disclosed, it is believed that Sharp intentionally sought out Hubbard with the intent to kill him.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrests of three individuals. Davione Sharp and Reginald Jackson have been charged with murder. A third person, Michael Baxter, is facing a charge of being an accessory after the fact. The case has highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in the community, prompting concern among local residents, even as police statistics showed a decrease in homicides compared to the previous year.
