In a tragic sequence of events on August 19, 2022, Joseph T. Faulkner Jr., a 22-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in Memphis, Tennessee. The incident unfolded in the front yard of a residence in the 6000 block of Whisper Valley Drive, stemming from a physical altercation involving Faulkner, his brother Jalen, and another man.
The dispute escalated when the other individual, Mancellous Perry, left the scene only to return shortly after armed with a gun.
Perry then opened fire on both brothers. Joseph T. Faulkner Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries. His brother, Jalen Faulkner, was critically wounded in the shooting and was transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Following the shooting, an investigation was launched by law enforcement. Mancellous Perry, also known as Mancellous Hurt, was later identified by witnesses in a lineup and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder for his role in the deadly confrontation. The investigation revealed that Perry and the Faulkner brothers were acquainted with each other, adding a layer of complexity to the case.
In May 2025, after a four-day trial, a Shelby County jury found Mancellous Perry guilty of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Due to a prior conviction for aggravated assault in 2013, Perry also faced an additional charge for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, for which he was also convicted. Sentencing for Perry was pending following the verdict.
