Darian Carter, 28, a Black man, died on March 30, 2020, in Memphis, Tennessee, leaving loved ones to grapple with the suddenness of his loss.
That night, the violence unfolded around 10 p.m. in the 700 block of Richmond, near East Trigg and Mississippi Boulevard. Investigators said Carter was with Antonio T. Taylor, and the two opened fire repeatedly into two occupied apartments.
Inside those homes were four adults and five juveniles, and the gunfire also struck a woman’s vehicle as she parked nearby—an instant where a reckless burst of shots spread danger far beyond the people holding the guns.
In the middle of that chaos, the shooting turned inward. Investigators said one of the rounds fired by Taylor struck Carter in the back, killing him—an abrupt ending in the very moment the night’s gunfire spiraled out of control.
Months later, prosecutors laid out their version of what happened in court. On October 14, 2020, Taylor was indicted on second-degree murder and additional felony charges tied to the incident, including attempted first-degree murder, two counts of reckless endangerment, employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony, and tampering with evidence. The case was assigned to prosecutors in the District Attorney’s office, moving the story from the street into the long, procedural grind of the justice system.
