Gary F. Dockery, a 43-year-old male police officer in Walden, Tennessee, was shot in the forehead on September 7, 1988, while responding to a domestic disturbance call. The shooter, Samuel Frank Downey, aged 68, had falsely reported the disturbance and then shot Dockery at point-blank range. Downey later told police that he wanted revenge against the police for reprimanding him about noise following a complaint from his neighbors.
