Summary based on 1 source
In the fall of 2018, the life of 19-year-old Jaylan Deshun Talley Sumerall, an African American male from Memphis, Tennessee, was tragically cut short. On the evening of September 30, he was at the Summit Apartments on Summit Arbors Circle when an attempted robbery turned fatal. A brief struggle ensued before Sumerall was fatally shot. He was rushed to Baptist East Memorial Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The Memphis police launched an investigation into the homicide. Initially, no immediate arrests were made, and authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to a suspect. The community mourned the loss of Sumerall, who was remembered as a bright and ambitious young man. A graduate of Bolton High School, he had achieved a score of 26 on the ACT and had attended Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi. He had recently returned to Memphis and earned his real estate certification from Harris Realty School, embarking on a promising new career.

After several months of investigation, a breakthrough in the case led to the arrest of Rayshun Townsend. He was taken into custody at his workplace and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Jaylan Sumerall. The ensuing legal proceedings were followed closely by the community, seeking justice for a young life taken too soon. His family and friends remembered his love for basketball and his academic accomplishments, cherishing the memory of a life full of potential that was violently ended. In the wake of her son's death, his mother, Tameka Talley, started a mentoring group for his friends.
