In the early morning hours of January 8, 2024, a fatal shooting shattered the quiet of Presley Road in Lexington, Tennessee, leaving 21-year-old Matthew D. Jones dead. An investigation into the death of the young man from Reagan was promptly launched by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, in conjunction with the Henderson County Sheriff's Office, at the request of 26th Judicial District Attorney General Jody Pickens.
Evidence gathered by authorities pointed to two men, Lee A. Weatherford of Jackson and D'Angelo D. Hart of Lexington, as the individuals responsible for Jones's death. This led investigators to a home on Reed Road in Lexington, where they executed a search warrant on a Tuesday evening with the assistance of SWAT teams from the Jackson Police Department and Madison County Sheriff's Office. While one person was taken into custody on unrelated charges at this location, the search for Weatherford and Hart continued.
The following Wednesday morning, the multi-agency effort, which included the Gibson County Sheriff's Office and the United States Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force, tracked the two suspects to a residence on Eldad Road in Trenton. A tense, hours-long standoff ensued, ultimately ending with the successful apprehension of both Weatherford and Hart. The two men were subsequently booked into the Henderson County Jail. They face a string of serious charges, including First Degree Murder, Felony First Degree Murder in Perpetration of Theft, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Theft of Property. Both are being held without bond. The extensive three-day investigation saw cooperation from multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Lexington Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
