On August 11, 2012, Vinson was dropped off near an apartment complex on Brianfield Drive in the northern part of the city, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. He was rushed to Jackson General Hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Friends and family remember Vinson as a loving son, brother, and a devoted father who was actively working toward securing a good job to provide for
his baby.
Investigations by the police revealed a grim picture of the events leading to Vinson's death. He was determined to be an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting. The conflict that culminated in this senseless act of violence reportedly began earlier in the evening with an altercation at a local nightclub. A fight between a woman named Tashonda Davis and another man set in motion a chain of events that would have devastating consequences.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement identified and pursued several individuals believed to be responsible for Jarvis Vinson's murder. Five suspects were ultimately charged with first-degree murder: Tashonda Davis, Roderick Gladney, Emanuel Beard, Jateryance Smith, and Kentavious Crisp. The Madison County grand jury handed down indictments for Davis and Gladney. Beard and Smith, who were both 17 years old at the time of the incident, were arrested shortly after and were to be tried as adults. Davis was taken into custody, while Gladney was already incarcerated on a parole violation.
