Summary based on 3 sources
On a cold February evening in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 22-year-old Quintin Fifer was tragically cut short. On February 8, 2014, Fifer, a Black / African American male, arrived at the Deluxe Inn on Lamar with his fiancée, her two-year-old child, and his brother. As they were in the parking lot, Javonte Thomas approached and fatally shot Fifer multiple times at close range. In the midst of the chaos, Fifer's family, though present, was not physically harmed.

The motive for the killing was determined to be retaliation. Investigators revealed that Thomas, along with his brother and another individual named Darius Love, had spotted Fifer pulling into the hotel. Thomas claimed that he shot Fifer in retaliation for an incident that had occurred four months prior, in which he alleged Fifer had shot his brother. This act of vengeance brought to light the devastating and cyclical nature of street violence.

The ensuing legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Quintin Fifer's family. Javonte Thomas was tried and found guilty of first-degree murder. The conviction carried an automatic sentence of life in prison. His accomplice, Darius Love, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder for his role in the crime. Love was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison. The resolution of the case underscored the serious consequences of retaliatory violence.
