In the Orange Mound neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of 10-year-old Jadon Knox on January 19, 2020. The young boy was walking home from a park with a friend on a Sunday evening when he was struck by a stray bullet. The shooting occurred just after 6 p.m. on Josephine Street, a place familiar to Jadon and his community. He was rushed to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, but tragically, his injuries proved fatal.
His family shared the heartbreaking detail that he had only been outside for about ten minutes before the fatal shot was fired.
The community was left reeling from the loss of a child described by his aunt as the 'life of our family,' a boy who loved to make everyone laugh. In the wake of the tragedy, neighbors expressed their fears and frustrations, with some indicating that the house near the shooting had been a source of suspicious activity, leading them to believe it was the intended target. A candlelight vigil was held to honor Jadon's memory, bringing together loved ones and community members in their shared grief.
The investigation into Jadon's death eventually led to an arrest in July 2021. Martavis Ayers, then 23 years old, was taken into custody and charged in connection with the shooting. Initially, Ayers denied his involvement, telling investigators that another individual was responsible for Jadon's death and that he had sold the gun used in the incident. However, he later changed his account, claiming the shooting was a tragic accident. Ayers alleged that Jadon had unintentionally run into his line of fire while he was defending his property.
Following his arrest, Martavis Ayers was booked into the Shelby County Jail. He faced charges of reckless homicide, false reporting, and tampering with or fabricating evidence. The arrest brought a measure of progress to a case that had deeply affected the Orange Mound community and served as a somber reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence.
