In the early morning hours of June 12, 2014, the life of 40-year-old Amkha Vetvong, a male of Asian descent, was tragically cut short in his Nashville, Tennessee, home. The unfortunate series of events began to unfold when concerned relatives arrived at his Ries Avenue residence to find the front storm door ajar, its glass separated from the frame. Their immediate call to 911 brought firefighters and police officers to the scene.
Upon forcing entry into the home, they discovered Vetvong deceased, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound.
The investigation into the homicide quickly pointed to a burglary that had taken a violent turn. Evidence gathered at the scene, coupled with witness testimonies, led the Metro Nashville Police Department to identify a suspect. The investigation culminated in the arrest of 17-year-old Cody J. Hargus of Smyrna, Tennessee. In a sorrowful twist, it was revealed that Hargus was Vetvong's nephew. He was taken into custody at his residence with the assistance of the Smyrna Police Department.
Hargus was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with his uncle's death. Authorities alleged that the teenager broke into Vetvong's home and shot him during the course of the burglary. The case highlighted the devastating impact of violent crime on families and the community. Following his arrest, Hargus remained in custody as the investigation continued to build a comprehensive case against him for the murder of Amkha Vetvong.
