It was around noon on December 25, 2022, when Spaunhorst was driving his blue Ford F-150 pickup truck on Interstate 24 West. In a horrifying turn of events, multiple gunshots were fired from another vehicle, striking the driver's side door and window of his truck.
The father of five was found suffering from gunshot wounds after his truck came to a stop against the median wall between the Shelby Avenue and James Robertson Parkway exits. First responders rushed him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The motive for the shooting is believed to be road rage. Investigators determined the shots were fired from a black sedan with chrome trim, which was later identified as a black 2016-2017 Kia Optima.
