In the early hours of January 7, 2015, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the life of 20-year-old Talitha Bowman was tragically cut short. She was fatally shot in a burst of gunfire that erupted at approximately 1 a.m. at the College Hill Courts apartment complex on West Main Street. The violent incident left four other people wounded, including an 18-year-old male, a 24-year-old female, and a one-year-old girl who was critically injured and left paralyzed from the waist down.
Following an investigation and a two-day manhunt, authorities arrested 17-year-old Cortez Sims in connection with the shooting. The surviving victims were able to identify Sims as the gunman. He was subsequently charged as an adult with first-degree murder for the death of Talitha Bowman, as well as aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and unlawful possession of a firearm for his role in the injuries of the other victims.
The case surrounding Talitha Bowman's death became entwined with another murder, that of Bianca Horton, the mother of the paralyzed one-year-old. It is alleged that Horton was killed to prevent her from testifying against Sims. This led to a broader investigation and a capital murder case against three other men, Andre Grier, Courtney High, and Charles Shelton, who were accused of killing Horton to silence her as a witness. The complex legal proceedings in these interconnected cases have unfolded over several years in the Hamilton County courts.
