On February 6, 2015, in Clarksville, Tennessee, a night that began with verbal disagreements inside The Lodge nightclub tragically escalated, ending the life of 25-year-old Terrence D. Harwell, a male soldier from Fort Campbell. The conflict, which had started within the club, spilled out into the parking lot, where it intensified into a physical altercation.
Though not involved in the initial disputes, Harwell stepped in, attempting to de-escalate the volatile situation and call a subordinate soldier away from the trouble.
It was during this attempt to restore peace that another Fort Campbell soldier, Cornell Hurley Jr., became the aggressor in a fatal turn of events. After the initial altercations, Hurley allegedly returned to his vehicle to retrieve and reload a weapon. He then came back to the chaotic scene in the parking lot and began shooting. In the ensuing violence, Terrence Harwell was struck in the head by the gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other soldiers, Kody McKinley and Raefeal Roundtree, also sustained injuries in the shooting.
In the aftermath of the deadly encounter, Cornell Hurley Jr. was identified as the suspect and was subsequently arrested and charged with criminal homicide. Following his arrest, the case against Hurley moved forward, and a preliminary hearing found there was probable cause to present the case to the Montgomery County grand jury on a charge of first-degree murder. Ultimately, Hurley was convicted by a military panel for his crimes, which included unpremeditated murder, attempted unpremeditated murder, and aggravated assault. His sentence for these convictions was 25 years of confinement and a dishonorable discharge from the military.
