In the summer of 2015, a tragedy unfolded in Chattanooga, Tennessee, that cut short the life of a dedicated Marine. On July 16th of that year, Carson Allen Louis Holmquist, a 25-year-old male, was killed in a shooting at a military facility. Holmquist, a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, was at the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center when a gunman opened fire.
Originally from Grantsburg, Wisconsin, Holmquist was a 2008 graduate of Grantsburg High School, where he was a member of the football team. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2009 and had served deployments in both Japan and Afghanistan. He was assigned to Mike Battery, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve. He was a married father with a young son.
The attack on the military center was carried out by a lone gunman. The incident was investigated as an act of domestic terrorism. The shooter, who also targeted another military location in Chattanooga that day, was killed by police in a shootout. Four other service members also lost their lives in the attacks. There were no other suspects publicly identified or arrested in connection with the shooting. The motive for the attack was the subject of extensive investigation following the tragic events.
