In the late afternoon of September 3, 2015, a sense of unease settled over a Nashville, Tennessee neighborhood. Police had received a call around 5:15 p.m. expressing concern that 20-year-old Cianan Derek Napier was suicidal and in the vicinity of Glastonbury Road. However, what investigators discovered on nearby Patricia Drive was not a suicide, but a grim tableau of violence. Napier, a White male, was found deceased, having suffered from multiple gunshot wounds.
His death was swiftly ruled a homicide, sparking an intensive investigation into what was believed to be a dispute among a group of young people that had escalated over two days.
The investigation into Napier's death soon became entangled with another fatal shooting that occurred the following day in Antioch, claiming the life of 16-year-old Kevin Ibarra. Authorities began to connect the dots between the two slayings, leading them to three teenage suspects: 18-year-old Shirim Khwaga, 18-year-old Markeil Williams, and an unidentified 15-year-old male. Investigators believed Khwaga was the driver in the shooting of Napier. She was also suspected of driving Williams and the 15-year-old to Ibarra's residence where he was fatally shot.
The pursuit of the suspects culminated in a tense scene. Police located Khwaga in her neighborhood and followed her and the two teenage suspects to Mount View Circle. Officers moved in and apprehended Khwaga and Williams. The 15-year-old attempted to flee, running into a nearby field carrying two guns and a container of marijuana. A police helicopter was deployed to assist in the chase, and he was ultimately taken into custody.
Following their arrests, Shirim Khwaga and Markeil Williams faced a litany of charges, including two counts of aggravated robbery, possession of marijuana for resale, and multiple counts of unlawful gun possession and evading arrest. At the time of his death, Cianan Derek Napier himself was being sought on a charge of aggravated burglary. A resident had identified him as the individual who had attempted to break into her apartment a month prior to his murder.
