In the late summer of 2016, a botched robbery tragically cut short the life of 57-year-old Mark Matlock in Nashville, Tennessee. The incident unfolded on September 6th in the parking lot adjacent to the tennis courts at Shelby Park, a place that would become the backdrop for a fatal encounter.
Matlock, along with a 32-year-old woman named Angel Pendred, had arranged to meet two individuals, 22-year-old Crystal Taylor and 26-year-old James Bratchie.
The meeting was purportedly for a heroin transaction, but it quickly devolved into a violent and ultimately deadly confrontation. During what authorities would later describe as a 'botched robbery,' an exchange of gunfire erupted, and Matlock was struck multiple times.
In a desperate attempt to escape the chaotic scene, Matlock and Pendred sped away in their vehicle. However, due to Matlock's grave injuries, he lost control of the car, leading to a collision with a Nashville MTA bus near South 17th Street. Emergency services rushed Matlock to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but his wounds proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. Pendred sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the ordeal and was also transported to the hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the homicide moved swiftly. The day after the fatal shooting, authorities located the getaway car used by the suspects on Elliott Drive in Old Hickory. Nearby, they found and arrested both Crystal Taylor and James Bratchie. The two were subsequently charged with criminal homicide for their roles in the death of Mark Matlock, a man whose life was abruptly ended in a senseless act of violence.
