In a tragic act of violence that shook a Memphis community, Gregory Webber, a 21-year-old African American male, was fatally shot in a drive-by incident. The shooting occurred on January 12, 2016, in the Raleigh neighborhood of Memphis, though some sources state the date as January 16, 2016. At the time of the incident, Webber was standing with several other people in the driveway of a home on Laura Springs Drive.
A burgundy SUV, carrying several individuals, drove past the residence,
and shots were fired from the vehicle. Webber was struck by the gunfire and was found unresponsive in the driveway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Those who knew him described Gregory Webber as having an outgoing, loud, and fierce 'country spirit.' He was a former student of Raleigh Egypt High School.
In the wake of the shooting, the community mourned the loss of the young man. The investigation into his death led to the arrest of 19-year-old Davise Banks. Banks was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Webber's death. According to a witness, Banks was the driver of the burgundy SUV from which two other armed individuals fired at Webber.
Despite the arrest of Banks, who was held without bond at the Shelby County Jail, the other suspects involved in the shooting were not immediately apprehended. Authorities did not release a motive for the slaying. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence within the community and left family and friends seeking justice and closure for the senseless act that claimed a young life.
