In the early summer of 2016, the life of a Nashville police officer came to a tragic end. Jonathan Perez, a 31-year-old male, was found deceased in his South Nashville apartment on June 5, 2016. The cause of his death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Originally from Bogota, Colombia, Perez had built a life of service, first as an Army Combat Medic and then as a respected member of the Metro Nashville Police Department, where he had received numerous commendations.
The events leading
up to Perez's death suggest a period of personal turmoil. He had recently been decommissioned from his duties as a police officer on March 29 of that year after being charged with misdemeanor stalking. The charge stemmed from allegations that he had repeatedly contacted a co-worker after their romantic relationship had ended.
On the morning of his death, a crisis hotline was contacted with concerns for Perez's well-being. This prompted a response from authorities, including negotiators who were sent to his apartment. Despite their attempts to make contact, they were unsuccessful. Upon entering the apartment around 9:30 a.m., they made the grim discovery. As his death was ruled a suicide, there was no criminal investigation into suspects or arrests in connection with his passing.
