In the early morning hours of July 23, 2016, a day that began like any other for 29-year-old Billy Ray Plunk, ended in a sudden and violent tragedy. A resident of Nashville, Tennessee, Plunk was a beloved father, son, and brother, known for his warm smile and generous hugs. A graduate of Harpeth High School's class of 2005, he had a passion for wrestling and was known to be a hard worker who deeply loved his family and friends.
That fateful morning, Plunk and his brother were at a
Bellevue apartment complex when they became the victims of a robbery. During the commission of this crime, Billy Ray Plunk was fatally shot in the chest. He was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but succumbed to his injuries. The incident was part of a larger crime spree that had unfolded across Nashville in the pre-dawn hours.
The investigation into the senseless killing led authorities to two suspects, Joseph L. Ware and his co-defendant, Jamal Bekhtyar. The two were subsequently indicted for their roles in the fatal shooting and the string of related crimes.
Joseph L. Ware faced a trial in Davidson County, where a jury found him guilty of first-degree felony murder, among other serious charges. The conviction brought a measure of justice for the untimely death of a young man remembered for his kind and loving heart. The court handed down an effective sentence of life plus 10 years in prison to Ware for his part in the tragic events that cut short Billy Ray Plunk's life.
