In the autumn of 2016, a family dispute in Nashville, Tennessee, ended in the tragic death of 24-year-old O'Shay Rutledge. On the night of October 25, an argument between O'Shay and his cousin, Charles Rutledge, escalated to a fatal conclusion. The altercation resulted in O'Shay being shot in the back of the neck. Despite the grave injury, he managed to seek help at a nearby hookah bar in Midtown.
Emergency services responded to the scene, and O'Shay Rutledge was transported to a local
hospital. However, the penetrating gunshot wound proved to be the major contributing cause of his death. The initial investigation into the shooting led police to suspect the incident was possibly drug-related.
Following the investigation, O'Shay's cousin, Charles Rutledge, was identified as the suspect. He was subsequently indicted by a Davidson County Grand Jury for first-degree murder. The case proceeded to a three-day bench trial, which took place from June 7 to June 9, 2021. After the trial, Charles Rutledge was convicted of second-degree murder for the death of his cousin. He received a sentence of twenty-eight years in prison for the crime. An appeal of the conviction was later affirmed.
