In a tragic turn of events on a Friday afternoon in January 2017, a young man's life was cut short in the Cypresswood neighborhood of Memphis. Twenty-three-year-old Addarrell Anderson, Jr. was found shot next to a van by a gas pump at the Grizzly Mart located at Horn Lake and Shelby Drive. The incident, which unfolded at approximately 4:15 p.m., stemmed from an altercation with an acquaintance.
Responding to the scene, Memphis police discovered Anderson suffering from multiple gunshot
wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, marking the sixth homicide in the city for that year. The location of the shooting was particularly jarring, being just across the street from Geeter Middle School. The altercation that led to the fatal shooting was with a man identified as Kejuan King.
Within days of the shooting, authorities made an arrest in the case. Kejuan King, also 23 at the time, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with Anderson's death. Investigators confirmed that King and Anderson were known to each other and had an ongoing dispute.
In August of the following year, a Criminal Court jury convicted Kejuan King of second-degree murder. The verdict brought a measure of legal closure to the case that had tragically ended the life of the young father. King was later sentenced for his role in the fatal shooting.
