In a tragic eruption of violence on a February evening in Memphis, Tennessee, a young man's life was cut short. On February 6, 2017, Marquis Bell, a 23-year-old African American male, was fatally shot in the 4200 block of Eastwind Drive. The incident unfolded during what was described as an argument, escalating to a fatal conclusion that left a family grieving and a community searching for answers.
The altercation took a deadly turn when Octavious Bland allegedly began shooting at Bell.
As the attack was underway, a second individual, Antoine Adams, reportedly approached from behind and also opened fire. In the hail of bullets, Bell was struck ten times, with three of the wounds being to his head. Both suspects fled the scene following the shooting, leaving Bell to succumb to his injuries.
In the aftermath, law enforcement identified Bland and Adams as the individuals responsible for Marquis Bell's death. Antoine Adams, who had a history of four prior felony convictions, was eventually apprehended. After his arrest, Adams reportedly contacted Bell's family to offer an apology but did not initially surrender to authorities. He was later convicted of first-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery, receiving a life sentence plus an additional 30 years. In 2018, Octavious Bland pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the killing. The resolution of the case brought a measure of closure to a family that had expressed concerns for their safety while the accused were still at large.
