City Marshal Gus H. Crouch, aged 56, was shot and killed on February 7, 1901, in Metropolis, Illinois. Marshal Crouch and his deputy were called to Daniel's Saloon on the riverfront around 3:30 PM due to a disturbance caused by two suspects from Kentucky. A desperate fight ensued, during which Marshal Crouch was killed and his deputy was wounded. The Massac County sheriff promptly arrested and jailed both suspects.
