In the quiet town of Hartsville, Tennessee, a reputation for generosity and a willingness to lend a hand defined 44-year-old James Turner. His life, however, was tragically cut short on the cold night of February 11, 2017. Turner, a Black male, was discovered shot inside a car along New Harmony Road, a grim end to an evening that began with no hint of the violence to come. Alongside him in the vehicle was 32-year-old Alisha Renee Mondoni, also of Hartsville.
A neighbor stumbled upon the horrific scene and immediately alerted authorities. While Turner was pronounced dead at the scene, Mondoni clung to life for a short while longer before succumbing to her injuries later that same morning.
The ensuing investigation by law enforcement painted a picture of a senseless act of violence born from a case of mistaken identity. It was revealed that James Turner and Alisha Mondoni were not the intended victims. The man the assailants were searching for was, in fact, James Turner's own nephew, Steven Turner Jr. The primary suspect, Keithandre Murray, had reportedly gone to James Turner's residence with the intent of finding Steven. When he was unable to locate his target, Murray tragically turned his aggression on the two innocent people in the driveway, opening fire and ending two lives. He was not alone in this heinous act; an accomplice, Rodney Garrett, was found to have aided Murray in the commission of the murders.
The wheels of justice began to turn for the families of James Turner and Alisha Mondoni. Both Keithandre Murray and Rodney Garrett were apprehended and subsequently indicted by the Macon County Grand Jury for their roles in the double homicide. In 2019, a Macon County Criminal Court jury found Keithandre Murray guilty on two counts of first-degree premeditated murder, ensuring he would be held accountable for his actions. The following year, in 2020, his accomplice, Rodney Garrett, was also convicted, found guilty on two counts of facilitation of first-degree murder. The convictions brought a measure of closure to a community shaken by the brutal and misguided violence that had stolen two of its own.
