On a tragic Thursday morning in Jackson, Tennessee, the life of 60-year-old Betsy Baker Raines was cut short in a senseless act of workplace violence. On April 6, 2017, Raines, a dedicated administrative assistant at the Casey, Simmons and Bryant law firm, was fatally shot. The incident unfolded when a former employee, Shurnue Bratton, entered the law office.
Bratton had been terminated from her position as a legal secretary at the firm in late March of the same year.
Following the shooting, the law office was found in disarray, appearing to have been ransacked. Betsy Raines was discovered with a gunshot wound to the back of her head. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. In the wake of the tragic event, Shurnue Bratton quickly became the primary person of interest. She was apprehended by police later that same morning.
During the investigation, Bratton confessed to the crime. She admitted to shooting Raines, stealing her car, purse, and phone. Investigators also found a 9mm shell casing in Bratton's possession that matched the caliber of the weapon used in the shooting. She also informed the authorities that she had disposed of the firearm used in the commission of the crime.
Shurnue Bratton faced multiple charges, including first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, and tampering with evidence. During her initial court appearance, Bratton expressed a desire to bypass the preliminary legal proceedings and proceed directly to sentencing. The judge, however, ordered a mental evaluation and advised her to seek legal counsel. Ultimately, in 2019, Bratton pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and other related charges. She was sentenced to 40 years in prison for her role in the death of Betsy Raines.
