In the summer of 2017, the life of Courtney Centrell Anthony, a 31-year-old Black / African American man, was tragically cut short in Memphis, Tennessee. On the evening of Tuesday, August 1, 2017, a heated argument escalated to a fatal encounter. The dispute occurred in the Raleigh neighborhood of Memphis, where the events that followed would leave a family and community in mourning.
According to Memphis police, the argument led to a violent outburst.
Johnathan Morris was later arrested in connection with the deadly shooting. Authorities reported that Morris admitted to his involvement in the altercation with Anthony. He confessed to having "unloaded" on Anthony with an AR-15 rifle. The incident took place around 8:10 p.m. in the 3500 block of Westline Drive.
Following the shooting, Johnathan Morris was taken into custody and faced serious charges. He was officially charged with second-degree murder for his role in Courtney Anthony's death. Morris was scheduled for arraignment on the Thursday following the incident as the legal process began to address the violent end to a young man's life. Services to remember Courtney were held in the days that followed, with a visitation on August 11 and a funeral and burial on August 12, 2017.
