In the summer of 2024, a shooting in a Maryvale neighborhood tragically ended the life of 62-year-old Jose Perez Olvera. On the morning of July 24th, Phoenix police were called to a residence near 48th Avenue and Holly Street around 9:55 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Olvera suffering from a critical gunshot wound.
Phoenix Fire Department personnel were also at the scene and pronounced Olvera deceased.
Witnesses at the scene informed investigators that a known adult male suspect had fled the area before law enforcement arrived. Homicide detectives promptly took over the investigation to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. The neighborhood, located near 51st Avenue and McDowell Road, became the focal point of the initial investigation as police worked to identify and locate the person responsible for Olvera's death.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of 20-year-old Miguel Angel Rievoles Perez as the suspect. In a surprising turn of events, on the evening of July 26th, Rievoles Perez turned himself in to Border Patrol agents at the Nogales Port of Entry. He was subsequently handed over to Phoenix police detectives. Following his surrender, Miguel Angel Rievoles Perez was booked into the Maricopa County Jail. He faces charges of second-degree murder and discharging a firearm within city limits.
