In the community of West Helena, Arkansas, 60-year-old Mikel Dwayne Booker, a Black/African American male, was a familiar and beloved figure, known for his humor and generous spirit. A lifelong resident of Helena, he was a man of many talents, working at the A & Z Market and as a landscaper, earning the affectionate title of a 'Jack of All Trades.'
His life, however, was tragically cut short on November 26, 2024, in a violent encounter that unfolded near a local motel.
The altercation that led to Booker's untimely death began in front of the motel and tragically escalated, culminating at the entrance of a nearby O'Reilly Auto Parts store. It was there, in the doorway of the auto parts store, that Mikel Dwayne Booker succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound. The suddenness of the event sent ripples of shock and grief through the community that knew him well for his love of dancing, basketball, and the joy he brought to his family and friends.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials were swift to respond to the scene. Their investigation quickly led to the apprehension of a suspect in connection with the homicide. The individual was taken into custody and transported to the Phillips County Detention Center for processing.
The events following the arrest took a dramatic turn within the walls of the detention center. While in the intake area, the suspect created a disturbance by barricading himself. During this tense situation, he managed to acquire an instrument and inflict harm upon himself. Authorities were forced to use pepper spray to subdue the individual and bring the situation under control. Following this incident, the suspect was transported to a local emergency room to receive medical attention for his self-inflicted injuries. No other injuries were reported during the disturbance at the detention center. The identity of the suspect and the motive behind the fatal shooting have not been publicly disclosed as the investigation by the Helena-West Helena Police Department remains ongoing. The community is left to mourn the loss of a man who was a cherished brother to seven sisters and one brother, and a dear friend to many.
