In the late evening of August 8, 2017, the life of 23-year-old Deonte Jerrell James came to a tragic end in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Police, responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked on the side of the road, discovered James inside. He had been shot, and paramedics who arrived at the scene pronounced him deceased. The young man, a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and a 2012 graduate of Brainerd High School where he had been a drummer in the band, was a father to a young son.
The investigation into his death revealed a troubled past, noting that James was a validated gang member. This was not his first encounter with gun violence; he had survived being shot in the chest nearly two years prior to his death. His passing left behind a large and grieving family, including his wife, parents, and numerous siblings. Funeral services were held on August 16, 2017, with his final resting place being Forest Hills Cemetery.
Despite the efforts of the Chattanooga Police Department, the case of Deonte James's murder remains unsolved. To date, no suspects have been publicly identified or arrested in connection with his shooting.
