In the quiet town of Puryear, Tennessee, a young man's life was tragically cut short on a Saturday evening. Joshua Hadra, a 22-year-old male, was fatally shot on September 23, 2017, in the parking lot of the Mini Mart convenience store. The incident, which shattered the peace of the small community, prompted a swift and thorough investigation by law enforcement.
The investigation, a collaborative effort involving the Henry County Sheriff's Criminal Investigation Division, the Tennessee
Bureau of Investigation, and the Puryear Police Department, quickly led to the identification of two suspects. Within days of the shooting, authorities announced the arrests of 19-year-old Phillip Nelson of Paris and 30-year-old Ralph Vulpitta of Cottage Grove. Nelson was initially charged with first-degree murder, while Vulpitta faced a charge of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
As the legal process unfolded, the charges against the two men were adjusted. In March 2018, a Henry County Grand Jury indicted Phillip Lee Nelson on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Ralph Vulpitta was also indicted, but on a reduced charge of possession of meth with intent to deliver, a significant change from the initial conspiracy to commit murder charge.
Ultimately, the case against Phillip Nelson did not go to a full trial. In May 2018, Nelson entered a guilty plea to an amended charge of second-degree murder. As a result of his plea agreement, the other charges against him were dismissed. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the death of Joshua Hadra. Details from court records revealed that surveillance footage from the Mini Mart showed Nelson getting into a car with Hadra, followed by the sound of gunshots. Nelson was then seen exiting the vehicle and leaving the scene in a different car. It was also noted that while Hadra had a firearm in the vehicle, it was unloaded.
