Deputy Sheriff Ed Thomas of the Campbell County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee was shot and killed on September 26, 1908. He was attempting to arrest a man causing a disturbance at the Roses Creek Baptist Church, near the Tennessee-Kentucky border. The man had been interrupting his own mother's funeral, prompting the pastor to call for Deputy Thomas. As Thomas tried to arrest him, the man opened fire, wounding Thomas.
