In a heartbreaking incident that shook a Memphis, Tennessee community, 12-year-old Devin Johnson, a Black male, was fatally shot in his home on September 30, 2017. The tragic event unfolded after an argument between his older sister and her boyfriend, Caterrious Williams, then 18 years old.
According to police reports, Williams became angry when Devin's sister refused to cook for him. This seemingly trivial disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation. During the altercation, Williams allegedly shot young Devin at close range. Devin's sister witnessed the horrific act, stating that she saw Williams standing over her brother before the gun was fired. The child was struck once in the head and tragically succumbed to his injury.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Caterrious Williams fled the scene. However, he was later apprehended by law enforcement. Williams was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and aggravated assault in connection with Devin Johnson's death. The senseless nature of the crime and the tender age of the victim left the community in a state of shock and mourning. Counselors were made available to support Devin's classmates and friends who were deeply affected by the sudden and violent loss of their peer.
