In the autumn of 2017, the life of 35-year-old Phillip Pero was tragically cut short in a quiet neighborhood in Spring Hill, Tennessee. On the afternoon of Sunday, October 29th, police were called to a residence on Iroquois Drive, where they discovered Pero in the garage with a fatal gunshot wound. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene, marking the beginning of a homicide investigation that would quickly lead to a statewide manhunt.
Investigators identified the suspect as
James Rush Huddleston, a 34-year-old man from Murfreesboro. Witnesses at the scene reported that Huddleston and Pero were acquaintances and that Huddleston had fled the scene immediately after the shooting. A warrant for criminal homicide was issued for his arrest. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation added Huddleston to their 'Top 10 Most Wanted' list, cautioning the public that he was considered armed and dangerous. It was also reported that he might be traveling with his girlfriend and a small child.
The search for Huddleston intensified over the following weeks, with law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service, actively pursuing leads. The manhunt came to an end on December 1, 2017, when Huddleston was located and apprehended in Omaha, Arkansas. He was taken into custody without incident and held in the Boone County Jail, awaiting extradition back to Tennessee to face charges for the death of Phillip Pero.
Following his return to Tennessee, James Rush Huddleston was tried for the murder of Phillip Pero. With a criminal history that included a prior conviction for voluntary manslaughter, Huddleston was found guilty of first-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for his crime.
