On the evening of February 20, 2018, Shamar Lewis, a 34-year-old African American man from Burns, Tennessee, drove to the Cobblestone Corners apartment complex on Ben Allen Road in Nashville. Witnesses reported that Lewis met with acquaintances who had arrived in a dark-colored SUV. After a brief conversation, four men exited the vehicle and walked with Lewis behind one of the apartment buildings. A short time later, the four men were seen running from the area.
Lewis was discovered behind the building, having been shot multiple times.
The investigation into the death of Shamar Lewis, which was determined to be a homicide, pointed towards robbery as the motive. The Metro Nashville Police Department's investigation led them to identify three suspects who were known to Lewis: Jemario Askew, Richard Felder III, and Jyshon Forbes.
Jemario Askew, who was 30 years old at the time, was the first to be charged. He was already incarcerated on unrelated charges when he was indicted for the first-degree murder of Lewis. Subsequently, Richard Felder III and Jyshon Forbes were also charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting. The third and final suspect, Jyshon Forbes, was apprehended in Knoxville by Deputy U.S. Marshals and was returned to Nashville to face the charges.
