In the early morning hours of April 22, 2018, the life of 29-year-old Taurean Sanderlin was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. Sanderlin, an employee of a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee, was outside the restaurant when a gunman opened fire in the parking lot before storming into the establishment. The shooter, identified as Travis Reinking, was armed with an AR-15 rifle. The attack resulted in the deaths of four people and injuries to several others.
Sanderlin, along with another individual, Joe Perez, was fatally wounded outside the restaurant.
The gunman continued his rampage inside the Waffle House, where he killed two more people, DeEbony Groves and Akilah DaSilva. The deadly incident was brought to an end by the heroic actions of a customer, James Shaw Jr., who managed to disarm the shooter as he paused to reload his weapon. Following the attack, a massive manhunt for Reinking ensued. He was apprehended the following day after being at large for over 24 hours.
Travis Reinking was subsequently charged with multiple offenses, including four counts of first-degree murder. His legal proceedings revealed a history of mental health issues. At one point, he was deemed unfit to stand trial and was committed to a mental health facility. After receiving treatment, he was later found competent to face the charges against him. Reinking pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The prosecution, however, pursued a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
