In the Antioch neighborhood of Nashville, Tennessee, a life was tragically cut short on a Wednesday evening in March. Sixteen-year-old Kevin Niyibizi, a male teenager, was at a friend's home in the 3900 block of Rock Creek Drive when a gunshot fatally wounded him. The incident, which occurred on March 17, 2021, left a family and community mourning the loss of a young life.
South Precinct officers responded to a call about a shooting just after 5 p.m.
and discovered Niyibizi deceased inside the residence from a single gunshot wound to his chest. The investigation that followed pointed to a peer, 17-year-old Eric Ishimwe, as the one who fired the weapon. Ishimwe resided at the home where the shooting took place.
During the investigation, Ishimwe recounted the events to the lead detective, stating that he and Niyibizi were handling and playing with a pistol that Niyibizi had brought to the house. According to Ishimwe's account, he pulled the trigger while the gun was pointed at Niyibizi, resulting in the fatal shot. Following the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, Eric Ishimwe was taken into custody and booked at juvenile detention. He was subsequently charged with criminal homicide in the death of Kevin Niyibizi.
