In the late summer of 2017, the life of 17-year-old Miles Sanders was tragically cut short in what was initially reported as a gun accident in Marietta, Georgia. On August 27th, police responded to a 911 call from a residence on Wilson Circle, where they found the African American teenager deceased. However, what at first seemed like a tragic mishap soon unraveled into a story of alleged gang-related violence.
Investigators with the Marietta Police Department quickly began to question
the initial account of an accidental shooting. Their suspicions grew as they processed the scene and interviewed those present. The investigation took a significant turn when law enforcement identified two teenage suspects, 16-year-old Harrison Summerour and 17-year-old Nicholas Palmer. Authorities alleged that both teenagers were associated with the Crips street gang and that their presence at the Wilson Circle home was not a coincidence.
The narrative of an accidental death crumbled as police delved deeper. According to arrest warrants, both Summerour and Palmer were armed when they arrived at the residence. It is alleged that Summerour was carrying a. 22 caliber pistol, while Palmer was in possession of two. 40 caliber handguns. The investigation led authorities to believe that Summerour fired the fatal shot that struck and killed Miles Sanders. Adding to the gravity of the situation, it was also claimed that Summerour had pointed his weapon at another individual at the scene, though that person was not physically harmed.
The arrests of Harrison Summerour and Nicholas Palmer brought a wave of charges against the two teenagers, who were to be tried as adults. Both faced serious accusations, including felony murder and violations of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. Summerour faced additional charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a pistol by a minor. Palmer was also charged with possession of a pistol by a minor. The motive behind the shooting remained a key focus for investigators, with theories ranging from a targeted attack to a possible gang initiation. While the arrests offered a measure of resolution to a shocked community, the question of why Miles Sanders was killed lingered.
